| dc.description.abstract | This study examines the motivations, patterns, and barriers shaping the political engagement of the Lebanese diaspora in Ghana with homeland politics in Lebanon. Guided by Transnationalism Theory and Social Identity Theory, it explores how diasporic identity, emotional attachment, and integration in the host society influence participation. Using a qualitative approach such as one-on-one interviews, document analysis and a qualitative survey, data were gathered from members of the Lebanese community in Ghana, and were analysed thematically. Findings show that political engagement is primarily symbolic and emotional rather than institutional. Participants expressed strong attachment and moral responsibility toward Lebanon, engaging mainly through discussions, donations, and digital activism. Generational differences emerged where older members viewed engagement as a familial duty, while younger ones participated through online platforms, reflecting a “digital diaspora.” Major barriers included distrust in Lebanon’s political system, sectarian divisions, and logistical obstacles to external voting. High integration into Ghanaian society also led to selective detachment from homeland politics. The study concludes that transnational belonging among Lebanese in Ghana is sustained through emotional and symbolic connections rather than direct political participation. Integration and transnationalism are not mutually exclusive; rather, they coexist dynamically, allowing diasporans to navigate dual belonging. The study contributes to diaspora studies by highlighting how identity, integration, and transnational ties interact to shape political behaviour across borders. | |
