| dc.description.abstract | Youth-led organizations (YLOs) have emerged as critical agents in Ghana’s development landscape, serving as intermediaries that translate national policies into grassroots action. However, despite their growing prominence, there is limited empirical research on how these organizations utilize communication to achieve their objectives. This study, titled Communication as a Tool for Development, investigates the communication strategies, effectiveness, and operational challenges of three distinct YLOs in Accra: Youth Action Movement (YAM), Youth Advocates Ghana (YAG), and Net Impact Ghana. Grounded in the "Strategic Choice Model of Communication for Development," the study employs a qualitative comparative case study design. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with organizational leadership, communication officers, and beneficiaries, supplemented by document analysis and non-participant observation. The findings reveal that these organizations adopt a hybrid communication approach, strategically blending digital platforms such as social media and WhatsApp, with traditional, participatory methods like peer education and Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) drama. This "multi-channel" strategy is found to be highly effective in enhancing youth engagement, cultural relevance, and immediate knowledge acquisition regarding sexual and reproductive health and civic rights. Despite these successes, the study identifies significant challenges, including resource constraints, infrastructure deficits, and a lack of systematic monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track long-term behavioral change. The research concludes that while communication is a potent tool for awareness creation and youth mobilization, its capacity to drive sustained development outcomes is often hindered by structural limitations. The study recommends that YLOs institutionalize their communication frameworks and that stakeholders provide targeted support for capacity building in impact measurement. Ultimately, this thesis contributes to C4D scholarship by providing evidence-based insights into the unique, adaptive communication practices of youth-led entities in an urban African context. | |
